I'm Peter. I live in Margao, Goa. I'm a mariner by profession and spend half the year out at sea. I spend about 3-4 months at sea and then the same at home. I've lived in Goa all my life except for the time at sea and college at Chennai & Blackpool.

I know that a lot of Bulleteers ride down to Goa. So here are a few things you may want to know about Goa. This is based on a lot of stupid questions I have been asked and the things I've heard about my hometown from people all over.
-The people of Goa are called Goans or Goencar (In Konkani). Not Goanese or anything else.
-Yes Konkani is the Mother Tongue of Goans and the Official Language of the State of Goa.
-Goa is a state with a Government, Chief Minister etc, etc. Not a Union territory. It used to be the Union Territory of Goa, Daman & Diu after liberation from Portuguese rule in 1961.
-Tourism is not the only industry in Goa.
-Public Transport is very much existant. In fact it quite efficient. For example a 30Km journey by bus from Margao to Panjim takes about 45 min. Compare that to Mumbai. And yea we do have bus stops. And busses stop at the bus stops and not 5 time between every stop.
-All Goan men are not drunkards (As shown in many Hindi Films)
-All Goan Women are not loose charactered (Again as shown in many Hindi Films)
-Susegad does not mean lazing around whole day doing nothing. Tourists can afford to do it. Locals have to earn a living too. It does mean relaxed but we also do our jobs.
-Don't argue with the local Policeman or try bribing him. If he pulls up up for a violation, calmly explain your case if you're right or if wrong admit it and agree to pay the fine. Most of the time he'll give you a warning and let you off with no fine.
-If you need to ask someone for directions or suggestions on where to eat etc., make sure you ask a Goan. He'll probably know a little more than someone who's just settled down here a couple of years ago. Of course this does not apply to questions like How do I get to Calangute, Baga, Anjuna or Vagator? and Where's Tito's or Mambo's? You can even ask this to a tree and it will give you the right answer.
-In any case there are signboards to guide you.
-Bullets are quite common here. So the statement Every one makes way for a Bullet is quite difficult to implement. In fact Every Bullet Makes way for another Bullet is more like it.
