I am a Doctor by profession, specialising in Psychiatry, working in Bangalore. My first introduction to the Bullet was on my grandfather’s (standing next to me in the pic) Bullet, which my uncle is now using. As a little boy, I used to sit on the tank, clutching the handlebars, and with my feet perched on the crash guard. Several years later, I begged him to allow me to ride. He first gave me the Enfield Enzyme/Crusader , which is similar to the Bullet, except for its 175cc, 2 stroke engine. Once that test was passed, the ride on the Bull was mine. I misjudged the gear/brake, and hit a deep pothole in 4th gear. The bike just went in, and came out, with no fuss at all. This was the turning point. I HAD to own a Bullet! The Royalty and the Majesty of a King, with the ability to devour anything in its way! Several years later, as an intern, I used to borrow my friend’s golden green 1968 Bullet, and that just increased my hunger. Finally, in 2001, a Black and Chrome A350 was mine! During my work in Chitradurga, I had some severe trouble, with the bike going off, and refusing to start. I faced a lot of embarassment, when all efforts by a mechanic, went in vain. The problem was finally traced to highly adulterated fuel, and I am a happy man again.I do get a lot of stares, and questions, usualy the “Doctor on a Bullet?” variety, but I have learnt to take it in my stride. There are others, who stop me, either coming out of a hospital, or in the street, and congratulate me, on the fine bike, and leave, sighing a deep sigh, that they dont have a Bullet! My Enfield is my primary mode of transport, and the riding posture, over long hours was giving me a bad backache. I changed over to Gas shocks, and a 535 Lightning handlebar. I also customized the rear grab-handle. The crash guard was changed to the Thunderbird’s, after a bad accident which left my left foot crushed.Like my first Bullet ride, which just devoured a giant pot hole, I am out of the pits, and riding again, as I always will. As somebody said, with long use of the Bullet, some of its qualities rub off on the rider. And for me, it has been patience, tolerance, resilience, and dignity. Amen! |
